While it wasn’t the first attempt to speak theoretically about the medium, it was the first that was drawn as a comic, making McCloud’s pages into simultaneous explanation and demonstration. However, nothing else he’s done has had the impact of Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art, a book-length essay exploring McCloud’s ideas of how and why the comics medium communicates with the reader. Among his inspirations are: the 24-hour comic challenge, Five Card Nancy (Google it), the original Creator’s Bill of Rights, and tools that establish him as a leader in the web comics arena. ![]() Originally making his name in alt comics circles with his light-hearted superhero book Zot (and the hilarious one-shot parody DESTROY!!), McCloud started a parallel career as a thinker and innovator of tools and concepts that moved the art form forward. You’d think it unlikely then that a book of comics theory would become a widely-read classic while also being cover to cover entertainment. If you’ve been to a liberal arts college, you’ve probably been assigned to read art or media theory books that made you hate, in some combination, art, media, your professor, the written word and/or living. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Ona Judge’s story is one that is rarely told-and in bringing it to light, Dunbar seeks to interrogate the enduring effects of slavery, paternalism, and racism on American society. The result is a book which seeks to examine themes of slavery and paternalism, freedom and agency, the failed promises of America, and whose stories get preserved in the historical record. Dunbar’s historical narrative fuses information gleaned from letters and diary entries with fictionalized speculation rooted in sociopolitical mores of the late 1700s. Erica Armstrong Dunbar is a historian, scholar, and Pennsylvania native whose scholarship and academic career, in her own words, have focused on “the lives of women of Africa descent who called America their home during the 18th and 19th centuries.” In Never Caught, Dunbar seeks to probe a little-known facet of George Washington’s legacy: the escape of Washington’s wife Martha’s “dower slave” Ona Maria Judge and Washington’s fervent but ultimately failed attempts to recapture Ona from New Hampshire, strip her of her freedom, and return her to slavery at Mount Vernon. ![]() ![]() ![]() There have been three silent film adaptations, one UK television version in 2000, and three minor stage adaptations. Elements of the novel mirror themes of the real-life Constance Kent case of June 1860 which gripped the nation for years. The plot was summarised by literary critic Elaine Showalter (1982): "Braddon's bigamous heroine deserts her child, pushes husband number one down a well, thinks about poisoning husband number two and sets fire to a hotel in which her other male acquaintances are residing". The plot centres on "accidental bigamy" which was in literary fashion in the early 1860s. Critic John Sutherland (1989) described the work as "the most sensationally successful of all the sensation novels". It was Braddon's most successful and well-known novel.
